Does CBD Impact Muscle Protein Synthesis?
Muscle protein synthesis (MPS) is a biological event that represents the basic process of muscles repairing and growing after the stress of exercise. The biological mechanism is complex and involves the synthesis of new proteins in muscle cells to replace damaged muscle tissue as a result of the stress of exercise and to create new muscle tissue. This process is likely the main focus of all traditional bodybuilding supplements, as protein and the essential amino acids (especially leucine) act as the primary nutritional stimuli. As a result of the potential impact of CBD on recovery, it has captured the interest of athletes to consider its use for recovery benefits.
CBD’s Role in Recovery Pathways
Cannabidiol (CBD) affects several physiological processes that could have some relation to MPS through the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is a large signaling system that regulates many biological functions, such as inflammation, pain, and stress response. While CBD does not directly stimulate MPS the way amino acids do, it may modulate the surrounding recovery environment. CBD’s anti-inflammatory qualities may reduce inflammation due to exercise that can temporarily reduce optimal protein synthesis, potentially providing more favorable conditions for muscle repair.
Inflammation and Muscle Development
Inflammation and muscle growth interact in many ways and there is a delicate balance to this relationship. On one hand, acute inflammation is an important signal for our bodies to adapt, but if inflammation response is too extreme or takes too long to respond, recovery can be inhibited. CBD has demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory effects through many pathways, such as inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulating adenosine receptors. In theory, these mechanisms could help regulate the inflammatory response by providing enough signal to adapt, while limiting the inflammatory response to a level that would adversely affect protein turnover.

Cortisol, the primary stress hormone, creates catabolic conditions that are the anti-thesis of muscle protein synthesis. There is some research showing that CBD may be useful to help in managing cortisol by inserting itself into the regulatory systems in the body for stress response. Some studies have even shown decreased cortisol levels after administration of CBD in some instances, which theoretically could create an anabolic environment in the body, encouraging the process of muscle protein synthesis. This cortisol management effect seems to be most meaningful during duress of high stress, possibly making CBD relevant to athletes when they are under significant training stress.
Sleep Quality and Recovery Management
Sleep represents probably the most important of recovery times for muscle protein synthesis, since most repair and recovery happens when the body is in deep sleep stages. CBD has shown some efficacy in improving sleep quality indicators by reducing anxiety and regulating sleep cycles. CBD may provide indirect support to muscle protein synthesis through improving sleep quality. Research has suggested that CBD may increase sleep duration and percentage of deep sleep in some individuals. Increasing sleep could theoretically lead to the expanded size of the ‘anabolic window’ available for muscle repair. The sleep improvement effect may be especially useful for athletes that experience sleep difficulties associated with training because of their compromised recovery.
Limitations of Current Research
Even though we have conceptual mechanisms suggesting connections between CBD and muscle protein synthesis, there are very few studies which have examined the direct effects of CBD on muscle protein synthesis as a unique entity. Most studies examine CBD as a recovery modality, and do not focus in on the unique protein synthesis mechanisms.
Practical Considerations for Athletes
Athletes looking to CBD for recovery management should approach their usage with moderated expectations on its effects on muscle protein synthesis and should continue to prioritize their muscle-building fundamentals. It is progressive resistance training, adequate protein intake, and sound recovery practices in seeing CBD as a potential adjunct.
